Thai Garden Catford – greasy, salty Thai food

Thai Garden Catford is a small Thai cafe (with BYOB) and food delivery service in south east London. It used to be outstanding around 2007-08 but has been slipping for a while now. We decided to give it another chance this weekend and wished we hadn’t…

Madsen – not mad-for-it

Walking into Madsen is like walking into an Ikea display room, complete with birch veneer chairs and tables and half empty bookshelves. It’s minimalist (slightly clinical and sterile) and is, rather unsurprisingly, Scandinavian. I can’t remember visiting a restaurant in London on a Thursday night that was as empty as this. We arrived towards 8pm on Thursday evening and there were two other tables of two already dining. Once they left, we had the restaurant to ourselves…

The Goat – join the herd in Baa-tersea Rise

I received an email on Friday asking if I’d like a free meal for two at The Goat, Clapham Junction. Needless to say, I read the email three times looking for the catch. When it was apparent there wasn’t one – they’re simply launching a new menu – I called immediately and reserved a table for two for Monday evening (tonight). To get two complimentary meals from the “fresh new menu” under the terms of the “preview week” deal, we had to:
a) make a booking
b) turn up
c) choose a main course dish each, and
d) eat

It wasn’t as hard as it might sound. Really.

There are many traditional pubs serving real ales and gourmet-style, British food around London Bridge, SE1. St Christopher’s Inn sets itself apart with competitive prices and by genuinely welcoming Tastecard.

Mien Tay – cheap, cheerful, BYOB + amazing food

My Wednesday evening pilates class isn’t on this week due to the half-term holiday, so a couple of us decided to stretch our stomachs in a different way… by visiting a local Vietnamese restaurant instead… It’s unbelievably cheap. £8-odd for a bottle of pinot grigio or £2-odd for a glass was the first thing that jumped out at me, apart from the eel, goat and frog specialities.

Suze in Mayfair

The first restaurant to be awarded top marks by Lardbutty: 5/5 – Suze In Mayfair on North Audley Street.

L’Express – salad’s never boring

L’Express brings a whole new meaning to salad. If you think you don’t like it, be prepared to be converted. The help-yourself salad bar here changes all the time but usually contains items like cold roast potato wedges, chunky broccoli, chillies, Caesar salad, chicken, lentils, pulses and bean mixtures, hummus, olives, a variety of cold [...]
