Mint Leaf, Haymarket

Mint Leaf, a dark, basement restaurant on Haymarket, offers loads of discounts and specials to tempt you in for a cheap meal, yet serves ‘posh’ gourmet Indian food.

It’s a restaurant of contrasts: the interior design is probably intended to be minimalist and high-brow, targeting business clientelle on expenses but also regular visitors taking advantage of an offer (eg. 50% off à la carte food with a Taste London card, two courses at lunchtime for £14, three courses in the evening pre-theatre for £20). I certainly wouldn’t pay £17 (full menu price) for this dish of mutter paneer (cheesey peas) tasty as it was:

Mutter paneer (£17.00) and platter of quail, mint lamb + lime chicken (£24.00)

Mint Leaf – Lardbutty restaurant of the week

The catwalk running along the centre of the dining area is a distinguishing feature – waiting staff walk along it with serving trolleys or stand to their customers’ attention (customers sit at lower level tables).

Mint Leaf’s best feature is its cocktail bar with an excellent selection of drinks, comfortable lounge and attentive table service. I had a vanilla and fig sour: vanilla infused rum shaken with fig liqueur, fresh lime juice, sugar syrup and finished off with egg white froth. Outstanding – a proper cocktail (fairly lethal) and reasonably priced at £9.
