Absolutely Starving

I’m doing jury service at Southwark at the mo, and am enjoying exploring the eating places around London Bridge. Thankfully, it shouldn’t be for too much longer though, or Borough Market’s fine food could bankrupt me.

A popular deli alongside Hays Galeria, Absolutely Starving pulls the punters in with its amusing name, and – I suspect – keeps them returning by serving quality food with a rotating hot food menu. Fresh sandwiches are made to order on a range of breads, and you’ll find Italian pastas and produce, groceries and delicacies for sale, along with a selection of wines and beers. You can order deliveries and even hampers and gifts.

I decided to get hot meals from here, to have as my main meal of the day (on days when I have classes in the evening and don’t have time to eat a full meal later). On my first visit, I had a falafel dish: large and very tasty falafel balls with an aniseed flavour (probably fennel or perhaps star anise? a bit different and extremely good) served in a take-away box with homous, taboule, salad and a pitta wrap. And all for £4.25 – very reasonable for a main meal which was nutritious and filling.

Being summer, there are many places nearby to sit outside and eat, including Hays Galeria, along the river Thames or Scoop amphitheatre by More London, where there’s invariably some entertainment going on.

On my second visit to Absolutely Starving, the hot food selection had changed from the previous day (which had included Thai chicken green curry), keeping the options interesting. That day’s selection included chicken in a mustard sauce with rice, caribbean chicken with rice or mash, lasagne and salad, beef stew, bangers and mash with onion gravy, etc. I had a chicken breast in BBQ marinade, coated in sesame seeds with peppered mange tout, mushrooms and potatoes. Again, good value at £4.95 for a main meal.
