The Feathers, Woodstock

Starter served on slate

Food is second to none at The Feathers, Woodstock, but the overall experience of eating here is – quite frankly – more poncey than it needs to be. And waiting staff range from faultlessly professional to pretty miserable, as we discovered on our visit last night.

While the slate slab (pictured above) makes for a really smart, classy plate, using cutlery on its surface has the effect of scratching nails down an old blackboard.

If dining from the a la carte restaurant menu you can choose two courses @ £39.50 or three courses @ £49.95. A bottle of (non-fizzy) wine ranges from £20.00 to £420.00. The menu changes according to what’s in season but currently, starter options include local wood pigeon, confit salmon and goats cheese pannacotta and main course options include venison, sea bass, lamb and tamworth pork.

The Feathers Inn has an impressive gin bar. According to Keynoir’s description, it “boasts the UK’s largest selection of gins”, with over 60 to choose from.

Woodstock itself is a quaint old place, well worth a visit. Blenheim Palace is here (a world heritage site, home to the 11th Duke and Duchess of Marlborough and the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill) and it’s convenient for exploring the Cotswolds. Plus, it’s full of lovely old (less poncey) traditional pubs.
