The Swan, Broadway

You’ll be hard pushed to find a more enthusiastic, friendly waitress than Cath at The Swan, a great gastropub in Broadway, in the Cotswolds. She was thoroughly knowledgeable about the food on the menu and told us about different items with such passion and genuine excitement, I almost felt envious that the staff there have to sample all of the menu every time it changes for a new season (and go in to work early to do so).

The Swan was a serendipitous find for me and H today, as we were driving from Stratford upon Avon (having visited Anne Hathaway’s cottage, Shakespeare’s birth place and grave) en route to Stow on the Wold, and chanced across this lovely looking pub in Broadway with its “Adrian & the team welcome you” sign outside.

Inside, it’s clearly a classy gastropub from the moment you walk in, with its great range of real ales on tap (I had a Sharp’s Doom Bar) and interesting gallery of tree-trunk cross sections on the wall.

We shared a starter of gilled portabella mushrooms topped with crisp bacon, garlic and chilli oil (£4.95), and for mains I had beer-battered haddock with home-cut chunky chips, mushy peas, tartare sauce, spicy ketchup and Aspall’s malt vinegar (£9.95) and H had marinated chicken supreme with a sticky lemon, honey & chilli sauce, served with chips and rocket salad (8.95). A glass of prosecco was reasonably priced at £3.90.

The Swan is part of Mitchells & Butlers Village Pub + Kitchen brand, which recognises that in “unique pubs at the heart of village life… there’s nowhere better to enjoy quality real ales and fresh seasonal food”. And, all Village Pub + Kitchen pubs/ restaurants are Cask Marque accredited to guarantee top quality beer.

Until the next time I’m passing through…
