Elephant on the Hill – classy pub food + regular BBQs

Even though the Elephant on the Hill (Lavender Hill) is a pretty large pub, bar staff seem to make a point of welcoming each and every person who comes through the door. I’ve certainly been welcomed with a cheery hello and friendly service each time I’ve been over the past eighteen months or so.

Hiring friendly staff and training them to be forthcoming seems to be their thing – if you don’t want to go up to the bar for every round of drinks, you can rely on attentive table service (and there are plenty of comfy seats, or chairs at tables, where you can relax).

There’s a great selection of beers (including real ales) and wines, and the food menu changes frequently and always looks enticing. Today was the first time we’ve eaten a meal here, having been hooked in a few days ago by the blackboard advertising a royal wedding day barbecue.

Chef BBQ-ing (behind the hedge!)

Between us we had several Blue Moon beers, a BBQ beef burger (premium beef, very nice too @ £9.50) and a BBQ chicken breast (@ £10.50), with hand cut chips (£3.00) and corn on the cob (£3.00).

This was classy pub food and – as someone who doesn’t have a garden – a treat to have it barbecued.

What a great end to a great day. Can we have more Friday bank holidays please?
