Noiya – Contemporary Indian restaurant on Lavender Hill

Don’t let the pink neon lighting and lack of diners put you off. Noiya, an Indian food station on Lavender Hill, serves more customers through its delivery service than in the restaurant itself.

Noiya and Gurkha’s Diner are currently our favourites for Indian/ Nepalese food deliveries and we alternate between the two. But as we were passing Noiya anyway at 9pm last night (a Saturday evening) we decided to pop in and order a take-away.

Noiya – deserted on a Saturday evening

There wasn’t a single diner in the restaurant but as the waiter explained, they’re mostly busy with deliveries. I do hope so as Noiya offers classy, contemporary Indian food that’s a little bit different and I’d hate to see them fail.

After all, competition on Lavender Hill is fierce: there are many popular, established restaurants like Nancy Lam’s Enak Enak, Mien Tay, Donna Margherita, Ukai and Amazing Thai and all too many that open and then close within a couple of years (like Hell’s Pizza, Tokyo Jo and Miyajima, etc).

Rather oddly, the waiter told us we were ordering too much food (I’m not sure that tactic’s in the restaurateur’s sales guide?) until we explained we were ordering enough for last night’s dinner and for today as well. Portions are generous (appropriately priced) and there was plenty enough for four meals in total (two each).

We shared three nicely spicy starters: onion bhajis @ £2.95, la’lia kebab @ £3.95 and lamb samosas @ £2.95.

For mains, we shared two dishes:
~ Achari lamb @ £7.95 – a signature dish of “succulent pieces of lamb with an essence of spices and pickles, added to a slow cooking sauce” (melt-in-your-mouth tender)
~ Chicken Madras @ £7.50 – “a selection of spices and chillies cooked with chicken and fenugreek in a spicy sauce” (this dish has quite a kick to it and again, is amazingly tender)

Main courses – chicken Madras (left) + achari lamb (right) with rice and breads

I haven’t eaten in the restaurant and it’s usually quiet when I walk past but if you are considering dining in, check out their mid-week promotions. They often offer a set menu with a glass of fizz or a cocktail for about a tenner which seems very reasonable.
