We were back in Clapham by lunchtime on our return from Berlin, and passed The Sun in Old Town.
Sorry, did I say passed?
It was pleasingly empty this Monday afternoon. That is, you could easily get a table with comfy seats (they’re always taken on a weekend). It’s a large pub with a big beer garden but it’s testament to how good it is, that it’s usually packed. Bar staff were friendly and helpful, and nicely chatty.
We were already hungry and – a couple of Sierra Nevadas and Brooklyn Lagers down – the food menu displayed prominently on blackboards (see sample menu) was getting more and more appealing. You can get three bar snacks (choose from the likes of black pudding, calamari, sausage rolls, etc) for £12.
On this occasion we shared a plate of calamari as a starter, followed by burgers.
We both had a handmade British cheese burger with fries: K opted for bacon and BBQ pulled pork toppings @ £13.75 while I chose pulled pork @ £12.50.
It’s not exactly cheap here but you do get great quality food, good friendly service (when the bar’s not too rammed with customers, which it often is) and a good range of drinks from real ales to award-winning gins (including SW4 gin, made in Clapham).
