The Goat – Battersea Rise

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to pubs selling real ales, a good range of drinks and great food around Clapham Junction in Battersea.

The Goat seems to stay ahead of competition by serving really good quality food and regularly changing the menu with carefully sourced ingredients to reflect the season. We were walking past this afternoon, having been to Wandsworth Common’s 5th Halloween Beer Festival and popped in for – yes, another beer – and a burger.

I’ve previously eaten in the upstairs restaurant (and tried seared pigeon last time) but it was before 5pm and the restaurant hadn’t opened yet so we ate in the downstairs pub. It’s a large bar area with loads of tables, and – as ever – it was packed and buzzing. The bar was spookily decorated specially for Halloween, and service was pretty speedy given how busy it was, and personable too.

Pork + chorizo burger with caramelised onions

We ordered two handmade West Country beef burgers (I had a pork and chorizo burger with caramelised red onions and fries @ £11.00, while K had a cheese burger with bacon and BBQ pulled pork and fries @ £13.75) and a side of grilled macaroni cheese @ £3.00.

I’m not going to pretend the burgers were as good as those at the The Cattle Grid last week (they just weren’t; the Cattle Grid does seriously *superior* burgers) but they were very good all the same; handmade from West Country beef with a welcome spicy kick from the chorizo.

On a previous visit here one Spring, we had seared pigeon (with new potatoes and mixed green leaves) and rib eye steak (21 day aged 10oz rib-eye steak, roasted cherry tomatoes and rosemary chips @ £15.75), all pretty special.

If you’re in Battersea and fancy a cask ale and some gourmet pub food in nice surroundings, The Goat is worth a visit.
