Beigel Bake – Brick Lane

While wandering along trendy Brick Lane in Shoreditch the other lunchtime, I saw a crowd of people hanging out further up the street. What was going on over there?

Beigel Bake was what was going on – a demonstrably popular, 24 hour bagel bakery with a huge joint of juicy salt beef strategically placed in the window, to lure us all in. How could I have only just noticed this place?

I joined the rapidly moving queue inside (there was a constant flow of people – a really high turnover) and eyed up the stacks and stacks of trays of fresh bagels (made according to the Jewish tradition of boiling before baking, which makes them seriously spongy). Apparently, they turn over up to 7,000 bagels a day.

Filled bagels start from about Β£1.50, with fillings including cream cheese, salmon and more but after seeing the salt beef in the window there was no other contender. It was served with English mustard @ about Β£4.00 and was so, so tender.

I headed over to the pop-up Box Park with its fake grass and Wimbledon on the big screen and ‘dined out’. Very special.
