LardButty in Berlin – Makoto

Great donburi at Makoto Japanese noodle bar, Mitte

We intended to eat at Vietnamese restaurant, Monsieur Vuong, last night (ranked #26 of 4,976 Berlin restaurants on Trip Advisor) but:

a) there was a long queue outside Monsieur Vuong
b) it was raining
c) there was an appealing Japanese restaurant opposite, with no queue, called Makoto

Makoto – Japanese designs + decor

We stepped out of the rain and into Makoto, which was pleasingly busy. Waiters were rushing around and just about keeping on top of customers’ needs.

There were already a few other tables waiting to order so we had to wait a while. And it was worth it.

Starters – kimuchi (pickles), gyoza (dumplings) and miso tofu

For starters we shared:

~ Kimuchi – homemade spicy pickled vegetables with garlic and red pepper @ €3
~ Gyoza – six pan-fried dumplings filled with pork + vegetables, with soy sauce @ €4.30
~ Miso tofu – two chunks of tofu coated in miso sauce @ €4

For mains, K had a big bowl of Toku miso ramen (spicy miso noodles soup with fried pork and vegetables) @ €8.50 and I had Yasai don (traditional Japanese rice bowl with vegetables, tofu + ginger sauce) @ €7.90, washed down with Asahi, a good dry Japanese lager.

Yasai don – fresh ingredients + very tasty!

A serendipitous find that amply met our needs, and was very reasonably priced (total bill for two was about €40).
