The verdict: Great variety of food types from many countries but there’s a lot of stalls packed into a fairly small space and it does get RAMMED with people. Be prepared for gridlock and queues.

KERB street food – Spitalfields

KERB comes to Old Spitalfields market in E1 on the first Wednesday of the month

From 11am – 3pm on the first Wednesday of every month, KERBanists set up street food stalls on Lamb Street at the back of Old Spitalfields market in Tower Hamlets, selling a range of culinary treats stemming from all over Europe and as far afield as the Middle East, Korea and the USA.

Food stalls include the likes of:
~ Capish creators of Italian-American tomato-ey meatball sandwiches
~ Falafel Al-Hooriya serving up traditional Gazan falafel in Arabic flat bread (vegan)
~ Jamon Jamon Paella making Valenciana + seafood paella
~ Kimchinary serving spicy Korean burritos (pulled pork, ox cheek, sauteed aubergine)
~ Kooky Bakes offering whoopie pies (salted caramel, strawberry cheesecake), brownies + small batch baking delights …you’d best be quick!
~ Miss P’s Barbecue cooking up barbecued fish + meat, served in a sandwich or skinny

Lightly toasted on the outside before serving – slightly crispy, sealing all the sloppy-tastiness inside

This Korean burrito from Kimchinary was full of moist, slow-cooked pulled pork, spicy and sour kimchi (prepare for the endorphin rush!) and crunchy veggies, and grilled before serving which crisps up the outer layer of the burrito and seals in all the lovely sloppy contents.

Made fresh and served hot, this burrito @ £6.00 wasn’t exactly the cheapest lunchtime sandwich but Kimchinary had the longest queue on my visit, appearing to be the most popular stall.

The verdict: nice and spacious food market with a sufficient variety of stalls – shame it’s only here once a month.

Veg as you go – Tachbrook Street Market

I can’t rave enough about the falafel sandwiches from the happy chappies at Veg As You Go, Tachbrook Street Market.

Tachbrook Street Market runs Monday to Saturday 8am to 6pm

There’s usually a bit of a queue as it’s a popular stall but it moves quickly. And it’s not unusual to be given a hot, fresh piece of falafel to nibble on while you wait for your sandwich to be made.

Popular Veg As You Go stall

First, decide whether you’d like chilli sauce as well as houmous on your wrap (it’d be foolish not to – it gives a gorgeous, subtle kick; their chilli sauce isn’t too hot by any means).

Fresh ingredients go into each sandwich

Then, all the veg, salad and pickles will be piled on to the wrap, along with more sauce (sesame seed/ tahini) and plenty of falafel. The rolled up, filled wrap is heated through and squashed/packed in, on the sandwich grill (blending all the flavours together).

Sandwiches are *packed*
– full of cucumber, tomatoes, lettuce, peppers, pickles, sauces + yum falafel:

It may only be a sandwich but it’s a well-crafted sandwich with substance. Simply the best.

Burgatory in brioche (in Greenwich)

Heaven or Hell?

If you’re *seriously* thinking about becoming a vegetarian, keep away from Burgatory’s prime beef burgers

I often go a few days without eating meat, just because I enjoy vegetables, fish, seafood and tofu so much. Meat isn’t an essential part of a meal, or even my daily diet. So the question about whether to become vegetarian does crop up from time to time.

And eating good beef burgers like the ones from Burgatory reminds me why the answer (for me) is always no!

Burgatory Classic – beef burger with caramelised onions, salad + sloppy sauces in a brioche bun

I was at Greenwich Market the other day (now a fairly upmarket, daily market in Summer, and much changed since my last visit only a couple of years ago). Inevitably, I drooled over the various food stalls (from chocolate truffles to muffins to world street food) and was finally drawn in by the fine-looking ‘natural beef burger’ creations at the Burgatory stall ranging from £5 to £7.

A simply good menu

M wanted the works. And he got the works. He ended up with a bacon and 666 hybrid (all the ingredients of the bacon burger topped with the 666’s homemade chilli, lovingly concocted by the obliging stall holders).
